‘We continue to produce the same high-quality content for 20 sports in 70 languages’

The global shutdown of sport due to Covid-19 has resulted in a challenging time for the industry. Spotlight Sports Group, home of the Racing Post and other sports content brands have been no different. With racing taking place in only a handful of locations around the world, Racing Post ceased publication of its daily newspaper for the first time in its 34 year history.

However, with the return of British and Irish racing (and the Racing Post newspaper) earlier this month we are in the midst of a bumper summer of high-quality group one action with Royal Ascot on the horizon. Eugene Delaney, Spotlight Sports Group B2B director today discussed the global sporting shutdown, the challenging past few months, the return of sport and how the group is preparing for the cliched ‘new normal’ world we are returning to.

Q: Firstly, how did the global shutdown of sports disrupt Spotlight Sports Group over the past two months?

ED: It’s been an incredibly difficult time for us as a group. If anyone said to us in January that for most of the spring we would furlough a large proportion of our staff, stopped our daily newspaper and reduced our services across B2B we would not have believed them. March, April and May are usually our busiest time of the year.

However, we’ve had to adjust, like every business in the world dealing with the global pandemic, and ensure bookmakers and partners know we are still here to support them. We continued to produce content for South African, US and Hong Kong racing, continued to supply our racing trading product from AllSported and continued to provide sports content on available sports. Added to this, thankfully our ICS-Digital and translation team continued at full strength providing digital marketing and SEO services for worldwide clients and reaching new customers across the gaming globe.

Q: Racing has returned with a bang in June with an array of Group Ones to look forward to. How does the return of racing impact the group?

ED: We’re obviously delighted to have racing back. Our daily newspaper has resumed production which is great news for the business and readers alike and we are also delighted to see the return of retail betting shops.

We have been working very closely with betting shop partners on building the digital shop of the future and this might arrive a lot sooner than we first anticipated with new social distancing measures. Our digital displays enhance the content Racing Post produces and we are hopeful these will play a big part in safely reopening betting shops.

Q: With no British and Irish racing for the past two months, have you noticed an increased demand for international racing content?

ED: Yes, without a doubt. International racing is a key focus of Racing Post. We have invested heavily in our product and technology and we are in the process of building up a global racing database. We were in a position to make this database available to our partners for some of the available territories.

The aim is to make a global racing product accessible and easy to integrate for all partners. Our heritage has been in the creation of premium content but by creating a global platform we will be in a position to offer customers an end to end racing solution through one integration.

Q: What’s next for Spotlight Sports Group once we see a return to sport?

ED: We want to reassure partners and bookmakers that we will continue to produce the same high-quality content on over 20 sports in 70 languages.

We know the return of racing and sport has been met with excitement across the country and we will be part of that. Our range of products and services enhance sportsbooks and customers enjoyment of sport from in-play football analysis to our premium racing spotlights and verdicts. There is no doubt that across the group we will be ramping up our content production and support for partners as the drive begins again to acquire and retain customers.
